OVERVIEW
The Sillustani Archaeological Complex houses the imposing funerary towers built in the 13th century by the Kollas (today called Quechuas), and later by the Incas. The last mentioned were the ones who turned this place into one of the most impressive necropolises in the Puno highlands because these mausoleums were built for the burial of mummified nobles, priests and rulers accompanied by ceramics, textiles, Andean food and gold and silver artifacts; mummies were buried in a fetal position, symbolizing rebirth in the spirit world.
The tubular structures measure on average between 4 to 6 meters, and the highest 15 meters high called "Chullpa Lagarto"; built with ashlar, mud and blocks of stone (brought from nearby quarries). All funerary towers facing east, whose meaning the reborn of the soul in the spiritual life).
The buildings continue to be a great demonstration of the advanced architecture and ancestral engineering by the perfection with which each piece fits with the others, its construction still being a mystery.
Chullpas are located on top of a small hill on the peninsula of the Umayo Lagoon with a depth of 14 meters connected to Lake Titicaca by the Illpa river.
